NH folks are the best [07 Dec 2011|02:11am]

sachael
This morning Mom and I set out to go shopping in North Conway. We were about 10 minutes out on Rte. 153 when the car engine let out a hideous wail and smoke started pouring out from under the hood. We pulled over and immediately called my husband and our mechanic to send a towtruck. About 30 minutes later the flatbed arrived and all was well.

The great part of this story is: On this lonely stretch of road, at least 12 drivers pulled over to offer assistance, a ride, or the use of their phones. Elderly ladies, cars full of teenagers, a charming police officer from the town of Freedom, a couple with NY plates. They ALL stopped to help. I was grateful and humbled by the kindness of these strangers. So I just wanted to say thank you, neighbors. You're the best, and you can bet I'll pay it forward next time I come across a stranded traveler.

Other Free Staters? [28 Feb 2010|12:25pm]
volt34
I finally had enough of the leftist government, silly gun laws, and high taxes, in Massachusetts and left Boston for New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project. Are there any other Freestaters in this group? I live in Salem, NH and it would be cool to meet some people in the area. I'm single, child free, and a techie. Working with computers is my 9x5. I'm very slowly working on a bio/immunology degree. And, I have been working on a military contracting start-up. So, my time is pretty limited. But, I manage to get a weekend to myself every once in a while. I mostly enjoy stuff out in nature since I spend so much of my day-to-day time in front on a computer (i.e. hunting, camping, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, etc.). I've very competitive and amateur sports/racing in NH would probably be fun. I'll probably get a sport motorcycle in the summer. I'm not really into music/clubs, anymore... kind of out grown that.

Most people I have met so far have been through my local Catholic Church (St. Joseph's Parish) and the local Republican party groups... (I can't believe how strong the party is here in NH. It's a nice and welcome change from Mass.) But, I'm not really into politics and the people I've met at Church are mostly younger than me or married w/ kids.

P.S. Does anyone here do Cross-Fit or know of a gym with a Cross-Fit program?

Fretless electric bass guitar STOLEN from Studio 99 Nashua, NH [21 Jan 2010|08:54pm]

sidceaser
DON'T BUY THIS BASS if you see it for sale.

1980s-era, custom-made fretless bass, with ebony fingerboard, Warmouth neck, black Schaller pickups and tuning machines, and a black bridge, built up underneath with lucite (VERY unusual)

IMMENSE sentimental value. This bass got me through Berklee College of Music and years of gigging with a ska band, as well as two decades of teaching.

STOLEN FROM STUDIO 99, NASHUA, NH
sometime between 11 pm on 1/20/10 and 6 pm on 1/21/10.

The bass is signed on its back by the artist who did the paint job:

"KREGEL 4/88"

(Lou Ellen Kregel was the artist, and she did the work in April 1988)

Reported to the Nashua Police Department at 8:00 pm 1/21/10

CUSTOM...no brand, no serial number. The artist's signature ... and that paint job. The only difference is that there is now a white plastic pickguard which covers the area around the pickups and the EQ/volume knobs.

Cover Bands [11 Jun 2009|09:15pm]

thebohomama
Quick question since I notice a lot of things being posted about music and bands.

Is anyone in this community involved with cover bands or just playing gigs regularly for a living in Southern New Hampshire? We've been looking to move to this area for a while and my partner is a musician at the moment making a living teaching guitar and playing in cover bands. He's curious to find out what sort of money bands are making for gigs.

Anyone have this sort of info or know someone who might?

xposted, I'm sorry.

Just wanted to let all the NH residents know that Tony-winning performer Idina Menzel (RENT, Wicked, Enchanted) will be performing March 18th at 7:30 pm at Portsmouth's Music Hall while on tour in support of her recent Warner Bros album, I Stand. Tickets are on sale now through the box office by clicking here. Tickets are $36 & $48.

From both a fan and an honest critic, take it from me - it will be a wonderful concert! Visit IdinaMenzel.com for more information (or just ask me).

Looking for Stuff/Sources in Southern NH [18 Feb 2009|01:19pm]

gemmintheruff
I'm in North Londonderry, and I'm looking for sources for a few things. I'm interested in acquiring a large supply of food-grade five-gallon buckets for a project I'm working on. I'd prefer free (who wouldn't?), but I am prepared to reimburse someone's efforts if they work at a Dunkin' Donuts or someplace that gets these buckets and then discards them. I'd even do the cleaning out bit, but I'd definitely need the lids.

Also, I'm looking for a source of 55-gallon drums for the same project. They need to be food-grade. I'll do the cleaning, if necessary, but I'd be willing to compensate for someone's time and effort.

Please let me know if you know of any possible leads. I'm willing to travel throughout the greater Manchester area.

Thanks in advance!

(x-posted to sonh. Sorry if you get this twice!)

My car registration expired in June, and I'd really like to get it renewed but just don't have the money to register it for the whole year. Does anyone know if New Hampshire has any temporary/part-year registration that I could look into?

Any help would be appreciated, I miss driving my car!

Attachment, natural parenting: Business? [11 Mar 2008|09:14am]

thebohomama
I have an unusual question and I don't know if anyone can help me.

I'm living in Ireland at the moment but my partner and I have considered moving back to the states in the next few years (likely New Hampshire or Vermont). Because the Dollar to Euro is going lower and lower and house prices are ridiculously cheaper there than here we will have a decent amount of money coming over.

I have a few questions:
I would like to start a business, preferably online and physical, dealing in attachment/alternative parenting: cloth diapers, slings, natural baby supplies, clothing, wooden toys, etc... you get the picture-- also provide a place for mothers to meet for breastfeeding support, etc. I'm always looking for tips to get started if anyone has started a business in this manner before (not necessarily the same product but a shops a shop a lot of times).

So, how successful do you see a business like this being? What are some good towns to consider that may be inclined to this sort of thing? I'm looking for a place with an interested client base and somewhere that isn't terribly expensive in terms of retail rentals.
